A SWOT analysis is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. SWOT Analysis is a structured planning method that evaluates these four elements of a project or business venture. But as professionals it is important to know how to conduct a SWOT Analysis for your career.

Career is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a person’s “course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)”. In this definition career is understood to relate to a range of aspects of an individual’s life, learning and work.

Majority of working professional Life is spent on his career only.

As a telecom professional I can assure none of the Strategy meetings will be over without a SWOT on competition and the current situation.

SWOT is an effective process used by companies to assess the current situation and the competitors scale to formulate and arrive on plans for execution.

When we do SWOT for an individual the abbreviations are as follows,

S = Internal STRENGTHS
W= Internal WEAKNESS
O= External OPPORTUNITIES
T= external THRTEATS

Strengths

Imagine yourself as a product to be sold count on your strengths like People management skills,core Engineering,specialist in PHP or any proven abilities you will possess and think of ways you will use these strengths to differentiate yourself from others.

Weaknesses

While doing the weakness analysis ,look at your own weakness as an opportunity for your growth,weakness can be public speaking, procrastination,presentation skills.

Opportunities & Threats

  • Try comparing with the people who are in the same lines like you and the difference with them is your threat.
  • For example if your colleague has an MBA and you don’t have then it’s a threat, opportunity is you can apply for a MBA course with an evening college or do a postal course.
  • If you have problem in addressing a large gathering ,its a threat and the opportunity is to work on by joining a course.
